Will Supreme Court legalise same-sex marriage, criminalise marital rape?

The year 2023 started with a bang in the Supreme Court, with a five-judge bench dismissing petitions against the Narendra Modi government’s demonetisation move. Just in the first week of the new year, the apex court has come out with several judgments that have made big headlines, including on the Haldwani land row. In a way, it sets the tone for the year. Because this is a year India’s top court is expected to hear and pass verdict on several significant subjects.
These subjects include whether marital rape should be criminalised, whether same-sex marriage should be legalised, on gender discrimination at religious places, whether reservations can be extended to Dalits Muslims and Christians. To give us a sneak peek into the year ahead for the judiciary, we have Amit Anand Choudhary, who covers the Supreme Court for The Times of India.
